Auto Translate

Open the Actions menu (the hamburger button beside the message box) and tap Auto Translate under SETTINGS. A sheet opens with two tabs — Outgoing and Incoming — and you set each one separately.

Once you pick a language for either direction, a shortcut chip appears above the message box. It shows the active language (or both, separated by a slash) and reopens the sheet when tapped, so you can see at a glance that translation is on without opening the Actions menu again.

Auto Translate is set per conversation and only lasts while you have it open — leave the conversation and come back later, and you'll need to set it again.

You can set only one direction, both, or neither — pick Off (Original) in a tab to turn that direction off.

Outgoing

You write your reply in your own language, and it is translated into the visitor's language before it is sent. Your original text is kept underneath the translation in the sent message, so the visitor sees both — nothing is lost if the translation comes out clumsy.

Outgoing auto translation only applies to public replies. Private notes are sent as typed.

Incoming

The visitor's messages are translated into your language as they arrive. This only affects messages that come in while the setting is on — it does not go back and translate the messages already in the thread. Turn it on at the start of a conversation rather than partway through if you want the whole thread translated.

Translating one message

You don't need Auto Translate on to translate a single message. Tap the small translate icon below any message bubble and pick a language — the bubble shows the translation with the chosen language as a label. Tap that label again to clear the translation and go back to the original.

This works on any message in the thread and does not change your Auto Translate settings.

Choosing well

It's a machine translation, not a person — short, plain sentences translate more reliably than idioms or long run-on messages.
Your original text always travels along with an outgoing translated message, so the visitor can fall back on it if the translation reads oddly.
Turning Auto Translate off does not undo anything — messages you already sent stay translated in the thread.

The same settings on the web

The dashboard has the same two directions and the same per-message translation. The setting isn't shared between the two — switching on Auto Translate in the app does not switch it on in your browser, and the other way around. Set it wherever you're replying from.
