Segments
Segments are dynamic, filter-based groups of subscribers that automatically update based on criteria you define. Unlike static groups, segments maintain live queries that always reflect your current subscriber data.
Creating and Managing Segments
Access Segments
Navigate to Newsletter → Subscribers → Segments to view all your segments.
Create a New Segment
Click the "Create segment" button to start building a new segment with an empty filter set.
Set Up Filters
After creating a segment, you'll be redirected to the subscribers page where you can define filters using the query builder. Segments use the same powerful filtering system as manual searches.
View Segment Statistics
Each segment displays:
- Subscriber count: Current number of matching subscribers
- Click rate: Average engagement percentage
- Bounce rate: Percentage of bounced emails
- Created date: When the segment was first created
Segment Management Actions
Rename Segment
Change the name of any segment to better reflect its purpose.
Refresh Stats
Manually update subscriber counts and performance metrics for a segment.
Merge Segments
Combine multiple segments into one, with options to keep or delete the originals.
Delete Segment
Remove segments you no longer need. This action cannot be undone.
Working with Segment Filters
When you click on a segment name, you're taken to the subscribers page where that segment's filters are automatically applied. This shows you exactly which subscribers currently match the segment criteria.
Understanding Filter Behavior
Segments use dynamic filters to determine which subscribers belong to them. The filters you see on the subscribers page represent the current segment criteria.
Modifying Segment Filters
While viewing a segment's subscribers:
- The filters panel shows the current segment being viewed
- You can modify filters using the query builder
- Click "Save segment filters" to update the segment with your changes
- The segment will immediately reflect the new subscriber criteria
Automatic Stats Refresh
Segment statistics (subscriber count, click rate, bounce rate) are automatically refreshed:
- Every 10 minutes when viewing the segments table
- Immediately after saving filter changes
- Manually via the "Refresh stats" action
Segments vs Groups
While both segments and groups help organize your subscribers, they work differently depending on your needs.
Groups - Manual Organization
Groups are manually curated collections where you explicitly add or remove subscribers. When you add new subscribers through imports or API calls, you must manually assign them to groups. Groups maintain the same subscriber list unless you actively change the membership.
Segments - Dynamic Filtering
Segments automatically populate based on filters you define. As your subscriber data changes, segments instantly reflect the current subscribers matching your criteria. You don't need to manually update segment membership - it's always current based on the filter rules you set.
